Transformational Event Lighting
Tips and tricks to achieve transformational lighting for your next event.
The power of light and lighting effects should never be under estimated. A well thought through lighting design can transform any space, help to create atmosphere and provide a talking point for guests.
Where to start…
Work with your AV partner to outline the feel and atmosphere you would like to achieve for your guests. Consider and discuss the following questions:
- Do you require lighting indoors and outdoors?
- Do you have a colour theme for your event?
- Is there a brand colour you would like to incorporate into the design?
- Do you have a logo or names you would like to project in light?
- Does the event require a change of look and feel as the night unfolds?
- Are there any performers or areas of focus that need to be well lit?
The Base – Your lighting design building blocks
Uplighting – After identifying your colour theme, use this throughout your LED uplighting around the space. In order to make this more visually interesting and more sculptural, pick two tones of the theme colour. Use the lighter shade of the two to accent any interesting architectural elements in the room.
LED battery uplighters are a perfect way to quickly uplight a space – don’t forget with LED uplighters you can change the colour at the press of a button.
Key Focus – Let there be light…
We have established a base colour around the room, now is the time to get practical. Conventional profile spots and fresnels can be used to light up any key areas of interest and drive guests focus, that could be a wedding cake, area for speeches or branded corporate marketing banners.
Adding the layers – Using texture to create interest
After following the first two steps you will now have a space which has been up lit with LED uplighters in two tones, lighting fixtures illuminating areas of interest, now it’s time to just add the little extra detail to really start setting your event apart from others.
Profile Spots, gobo textured lighting and haze – Using breakups around the room will create stunning static beams that can be used across dance floors, tables or even onto walls to create interesting patterns.
By using standard metal gobos this added extra is an inexpensive solution to bring the whole design to life, adding a three dimensional look.
Creating the wow factor – Movement, more colour and beams
Let’s talk moving lights – If you want to push the boat out or use light to display messages that move around a space we need to talk moving lights. They come in all shapes, sizes and solutions that meet most budgets.
Moving lights can serve multiple purposes, be used to assist with key area lighting, used for eye candy effects or with glass gobos to show messages / branding… As they move at a press of a button why not use them for all purposes?
Rotating and static gobos – beam shaping effects can be used so add more texture or beam rotation in the air, once again adding to the three dimensional look we strive for in lighting design.
Colour – Moving lights allow you to change colours at the press of a button. Lighting looks can evolve and change throughout the event. Some moving lights allow split colours, producing two colours from one fixture, this mixed with gobos can create some stunning effects.
Lighting simplified into these steps provides you lots of simple tools to be able to change the look of an event space. The complexity of the lighting can change but the principles underpinning the design process remain the same. Here at Avensys Hire & Events we are great with Light and have created some stunning designs that both support and elevate events.
